Being prepared to respond quickly and effectively to different disaster events, and reduce their impact, is vital. In the developing world, this is especially important because economic instability and lower levels of development mean that these countries and their people are typically more vulnerable to the shocks of a disaster than those in the developed world.

Our emergency response team is made up of trained technical specialists, with specialisation in emergency food assistance, cash and food vouchers, emergency nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and humanitarian logistics, ready to be deployed at short notice. JAM coordinates with the government at both national and local levels and participates in the United Nations cluster system for a coordinated approach to ensure that humanitarian actors work together, reducing duplication of efforts and ensuring all people in need receive aid.

Post emergency, we work alongside communities to enable early recovery. Our goal is to transition the situation as quickly as possible from an emergency response to rehabilitation and recovery so communities can rebuild sustainable livelihoods. We also work to increase community resilience to future emergencies through agricultural rehabilitation, complete value chains, and support to small-holder agricultural market systems.

Our Emergency Response Programme interventions are designed to:

  • Save Lives
  • Stabilise Communities
  • Rehabilitate Communities
  • Increase Resilience
  • Prepare for Future Disasters

Emergency Response Programme interventions used are selected based on the needs of the affected community. Interventions include, but are not limited to;

  • Emergency Food Assistance
  • Non Food Item (NFI) Distribution
  • Cash and Food Vouchers
  • Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene
  • Humanitarian Logistics

JAM is active in UN clusters for Food Security and Livelihoods, Nutrition and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.
